Hello and a very warm welcome to Ash class!
We take great pride in our learning, as well as supporting our peers with theirs. We talk a lot about having a growth mindset and to help us with this, we have Owl and Ted, they are a toy teddy bear and owl. Owl has a fixed mindset and does not like trying new things, says what is/is not possible and won’t change! Luckily, we have Ted who reminds us that it is good to try new things, even if it is a challenge and that even when things get tough, we never, ever, ever, give up! Ted tells us that mistakes help us learn and that making several drafts of our work is a good thing, as we can always improve! You will often hear the children say, “You're like Ted!"
To help everyone become more of an independent learner, we use the 3B4ME approach. We have to do three things before we ask an adult for help: brain (use your brain to think about the question/problem again), book (could the answer be in a book, or on display), buddy (ask your talk partner, or other people on your table), boss (if you still need help, ask an adult).
Topics covered during 2021-22:
Term 1 and 2 - Ancient Greece
Term 3 - Greece - a study of a European country
Term 4 - Map work - UK focus
Term 5 and 6 - The Victorians
We are really looking forward to learning as much as we can about these varied topics and making as many links as we can. What we learn in our history and geography lessons informs other areas of the curriculum, this really brings our learning alive.

For children on the school reading scheme, we offer books that are decodable using their phonics learning. For free readers, there are a variety of fiction and non-fiction books available.
Please try to listen to your child read some of their school book at least three times each week. If you are able, take time to discuss the text, focusing on VIPERS skills which we use in school:
Vocabulary: discuss meanings of unfamiliar words,
Inference: use clues to discuss events or characters,
Predict: discuss what children think might happen next,
Explain: discuss why has the author made certain choices,
Retrieve: find information directly from the text,
Sequence: order events from the text.
Weekly spellings are sent home in a folder every Friday. Children must practise their spellings at least three times and complete the spelling grid. Spelling folders must be returned to school every Wednesday morning.
