School name

Governing Body of sutton benger PRIMARY school

All schools in England have a Governing Body which is responsible for overseeing many of the strategic decisions of the school. Sutton Benger's Governing Board is proud of the school, its staff and pupils. It is an active and enthusiastic team helping to make strategic decisions about the direction of the school, acting as a critical friend and offering support and challenge to the senior leadership of the school.

 What are the Governing Body's three core functions?

  • ensuring clarity of school vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of  staff; and
  • overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

Further information on governance can be found here

HOW IS THE GOVERNING BODY STRUCTURED?

In 2015 the governing body elected to reconstitute, in keeping with statutory guidance from the Department for Education. We took the decision as it allowed us to change the numbers and types of governors we have, and to appoint more people on the basis of the skills they could bring. The governing body, following reconstitution, agreed the following governing board structure:

  • the headteacher (executive/associate)(ex officio)
  • one elected staff governor (elected by school staff)
  • one elected authority governor(nominated by the LA);
  • three elected (or appointed) parent governors;
  • eight foundation governors (appointed by the Diocese);
  • elected associate member's (non-voting)

The standard term of office for a governor is four years.

In November 2015 the Governing Body elected to adopt a co-chair structure.

The Full Board of Governors meets six times each year. Subcommittees support the Board by undertaking appropriate detailed background work. The committees, which aim to meet each term, report to the Board. At Sutton Benger we have the following committees.

There is also a committee for Pay,   although this meets less frequently

We also have an important strategic working group, chaired by Mr Tom Whittingham. Its purpose is to act as a strategic and creative 'think tank' for the future direction, collaboration and development of the school, reporting back timely  recommendations to the governing body and its committees.
